As Bakha turns down the narrow street, he passes various shops, including one selling cheap jewelry. He remembers how as a child he wanted to wear rings, but now that he knows the British don’t like jewelry, he finds such accoutrements garish. As he walks, he cries out the untouchables warning every so often. Bakha is pretending to be a rich man when he bumps into a member of the upper caste... and then everything goes haywire.
