The slaves are at the whims of their masters. So, as their master's circumstances change, so do the fortunes of the slaves. An example of this is when Mr. Shelby sells Tom and Harry to a cruel slave trader, Mr. Haley, because he has lost much of his money. He would lose his farm if he didn't sell the slaves.
