Marie is cruel and has no conscience. While her husband and daughter are alive, she is a mean hearted taskmaster, she abuses their slaves, and although her husband forbids public punishment, she is mercilous within the realm of her home. She is indifferent to her dying daughter, too busy making up illnesses of her own to look to the needs of her child. After Eva and Augustine are both dead, she casts away their final wishes, sells the slaves at auction, and refuses Tom's freedom.... something he'd been promised.
