Legree soon notices what a good worker Tom is, yet he feels a "secret dislike for him." Tom is simply too loyal and "good". This enrages Legree. THe thought of liking a slave makes him hate the slave even more. He feels that Tom could be an overseer is he were tough, but notices the goodness and compassion in Tom and resents it.
