what is eva referring to when she says "these things sink into my heart" on several occasions?

She says this when she hears about the mistreatment of slaves. In Chapter 19, for example, Eva says that Tom need not get the horses because she no longer feels like riding. Tom asks her why, and she tells him that Prue's story has upset her:she adds that "these things sink into my heart."
