What transforms Cassy?
In brief, the answer is love. She is swayed first by Tom's piety and love of God to engineer her escape with Emmeline; she is moved by Emmeline's love to defend herself; she is moved by Master George's true compassion for Tom upon his deathbed; and, of course, more than anything the discovery of her daughter Eliza transforms Cassy completely. Cassy changes based on access to love that will not be violated, given that her own experiences of love have ended in nothing but horrific violation up until this point.
