In Chapter Six, we see the pride and respect afforded the soldiers as they prepare to leave. The "young women" are smitten, and the mothers cherish and show pride in small gifts like airmen's wings (pins) that they wear everyday.

Society itself has changed immensely since the attack at Pearl Harbor. American citizens are afraid, there are rumors that California will be attacked, and as a result, public places have been put under guard.
