What happened to Alice? I don't really understand what happened to her in the asylum?

So, it's kind of confusing, but I think that Alice was some kind of plaything for an older vampire, and was kept in an asylum because she had visions of the future (she was abandoned there by her parents). Then James somehow caught her scent, and wanted to feed on her, so the older vampire turned Alice into a vampire in order to protect her from James. So, James kills the older vampire out of anger.
