What motivates Bass to help Northup, even to suggesting that he will travel to Saratoga to seek Northup's free papers?

Bass is very sympathetic to Northrup. He has gotten to know Northrup well when building the house and likes him. Bass is an abolitionist at heart and feels for Northrup's case.
