what has happened to viola prior to arriving in illyria

We are introduced to Viola as a survivor of a shipwreck. We aren't sure if her brother, who was lost at sea, is alive or not. The Ship's Captain of their wrecked ship informs Viola that they are in Illyria, which is ruled by Orsino.
