Did your opinion about mitch change as the book went on

I think that Mitch was somewhat disillusioned with his life at the beginning of the novel. He was dissatisfied with his pursuit of career and money. By the end of the novel Mitch appreciates simply being alive. Money and career become merely dressings to the simple joy of living every day, reveling in the simple pleasures that life has to offer.
