What role does Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters play?

In the play Trifles, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters play an important role. What do you think that is? How do they reveal thoughts on women during that time period?

The two women are actually great detectives. They have far more insight than the men and show themselves to be accurate in their intuition. I've always seen them as a voice for the suspect. Note, they also take the law into their own hands as protectors.
