Mrs. Peters is small, wiry, and slightly nervous. She defers to the men, particularly her husband, and has no wish to do anything that would be perceived as inappropriate or unlawful.

Mrs. Hale, on the other hand, is a big woman. Rather than defer to the men, she resents their condescending behavior. Thus, she is far more lilely than Mrs. Peters to go her own way.
