Mrs. Hale feels guilty because she understands how lonely Mrs. Wright must have been. She's chastising herself for not taking more time with the young wife.
MRS. HALE: I could've come. I stayed away because it weren't cheerful--and that's why I ought to have come. I--I've never liked this place.
