The songbird with its neck broken represents Mrs. Wright. Mrs. Wright is like the bird whose voice has also been stopped by being married to Mr. Wright. Mrs. Wright has been subjugated and oppressed so many years by being made to cook and clean and be a virtual slave to a "hard man".
