Why does silver in treasure island switch sides and try to save Jim's life from his angry men?

Long John Silver actually likes Jim, and says he's "never seen a better boy." It isn't about changing sides, as much as it's about the fact Silver cares about Jim..... something we haven't seen him capable of before this.
