The old seaman is mysterious and solitary. The pirate is clearly watching for someone he does not want to see. The unknown contents of the treasure chest, all add to the mystery surrounding the novel, a tome that is established with exquisite skill. The setting adds to the mood. The place is a secluded inn, cut off from hope of human intervention or human guidance.
