How is Stevenson able to let us know that Jim has been stabbed and Hands has been shot without telling us specifically?

We know that Jim has been stabbed because he cannot hold his gun..... his hands are wet with blood. We know that Hands has been shot because he falls from the mast and into the water after the pistols accidentally discharge.
