In Chapter Eight, Pauline does the exact opposite of everything the Sister asks her to do. When Sister Anne tries to feeds her, Pauline spits the food out, believing that it is Satan who is forcing things inside of her and poisoning her. When Sister Anne tells her to open her mouth, Pauline refuses, even feels victorious as Sister Anne shows impatience and must confess to Father Damian. When Sister Anne attempts tp force her to eat, Pauline notes that if she holds her breath, she will die, and Sister Saint Anne will have to pay for it. Pauline then closes her eyes and allows her mind to wander, and in her dream she visits Lake Matchimanito where she stands on the shore gazong out at the lake monster, which has scales, horns, iron in his skin, and stone in his lips. As Pauline regains her consciousness, she realizes she is swallowing the broth, and having struggled she feels the power of Christ. After this, she sleeps without dreams. She eats and drinks with the sister's assistance.
