Why was Cole in trouble in Chapters 1-2?

Cole had a long list of "trouble" in his short life, but in this case, he broke into a store and made the mistake of bragging about it at school. As a result, one of his classmates, Peter Driscoll, told the police. After being turned in, Cole brutally beat Peter, which caused permanent problems.
