Why does Edwin think they should have stayed in the water longer? What do you think?

Edwin thinks that Cole should be sincere about experiencing the cold water. Cole needs to understand the reasons why he is doing it and understand the discomfort of the cold water to gain benefit from the experience. Cole cannot grudgingly perform the action. I think that Edwin understands Cole better than Cole understands himself.
