Why do you think Edwin and Garvey allow Cole to make his own choices?

Cole needs to start making his mistakes and having to live with the consequences of them. In the wilderness, there is nothing Cole can manipulate. Cole must pay for his mistakes. This teaches responsibility and discipline to Cole.
