Cole has a history of abuse at the hands of his father. His mother, an alcoholic, did not help Cole. Cole consequently learned that violence was an effective way to get what he wanted. His father used it and it seemed, to Cole, to work for him. Cole used violence both as a tool to assert his self-esteem and a way to hide his pain. The cycle can only be broken when Cole faces his pain and takes responsibility for his actions.
