What does Cole begin building in this chapter? Why must it be of such high quality, and why do Edwin and Garvey not help him with the labour?

Cole is beginning a shelter, a cabin in which he'll reside for the next year. Edwin and Garvey don't help him physically because they're helping him emotionally........... Cole needs to find the strength and abilities within himself more than he needs their physical assistance.
