When Cole is laying dying on the rocks, he is watching the mother bird feed her young. Soon after, Cole refers to himself, indirectly, as a bird. He refers to the place he is as "the nest" and to his mouth as his "beak". I don't have a book nearby or I would reference you page numbers.
