At the end of Chapter 2, Cole "tried to swallow the bitter taste that had come to his mouth". Why does Cole have a bitter taste in his mouth?

lights a match and burns the shelter, a symbol of any attachment to those who he felt didn’t really care about him. As he sees everything go up in flames, he realizes the error of his rash choice.The bitter taste comes from the smoke and gass of the fire and, on a metaphorical level, his poor choice to burn the shelter.
