Cole does not trust adults in general. He thinks adults merely pass him along as a problem to other adults. Cole never believes that this is his "last chance" so he does not respect Garvey when he says that Cole is really on his last chance. He also didn't trust anybody that was not afraid of him: Garvey didn't fear Cole.
