I think Cole begins to experience this after the bear has beaten the snot out of him. Cole begins to care about life again; not necessarily his life but other life like the life of the little birds who had fallen from the tree. Cole begins to see that his actions, positive or negative, affect the world around him. Cole can make a difference in his life before he dies or simply cause harm and cease to exist. I like the philosophy here. Doing positive things feels good for a reason. When one makes other people smile, the positive energy is passed on to someone else. That's not a bad way to live!
