I think the Spirit Bear gives Cole a reason to live. Cole's transformative experience with the bear enables him see truth for the first time in his life.

Coles reason to live is to learn from his wrongs and to prove to others he can change especially to those who have stretched their necks out so far to help and support him like Edwin and garvey.
