For much of the novel Cole struggles to come to terms with his anger. He often pushes others away to isolate himself with his own pain. He has learned to manipulate others, especially adults, to validate his own insecurities. Cole continues in this pattern until the Spirit Bear mauls him and Cole begins to think outside of his old emotions.
