How are the baby birds a turning point for Cole?

I think the baby birds falling out of their nests during the storm was a turning point for Cole. It was the first time that Cole felt a sincere empathy for another living thing. Cole began to think about these birds before he thought about himself. This is the beginning of Cole becoming a dynamic character.
