Describe Cole's first encounter with what appears to be spirit bear?

Cole thinks about trying to swim his way to freedom while on the island. When he tries, he's quickly forced back to shore because of a leg cramp. Once back, he sees a white bear..... the spirit bear. Cole throws a rock at the bear thinking it will frighten it away, but the bear remains, unmoving. Then, the spirit bear strangely disappears.
