Cole's lie shows itself when Cole realizes that he has no way to justify his actions..... a canoe meant escape..... and that would have been his only purpose for carving one.

If he carved a canoe, it wouldn’t have to mean he planned to escape. Maybe he would use it for fishing, he told himself. But Cole knew that was a lie.
