The lighthouse symbolizes permanence and constancy, with its steady light that never ceases. The light produced by the lighthouse is a derivative symbol, representing the ability to emit energy and influence those around you. Mrs. Ramsay is the character that relies on the lighthouse as a symbol of permanence and also as a source of energy.
