Why was Jem moody after the night the children sneaked up to the back of the Radley house?

When Jem went back to the Radley's to retrieve his pants, he found them mended and folded..... awaiting his return. This confuses Jem, in addition, to the feelings of guilt he already has for lying to and disappointing his father.
