Why dose jem react violently when scout talks about what she overheard at the courthouse?

Jem cannot reconcile that his friends and neighbours are so wilfully ignorant that they would reward such a travesty of justice and human decency. The verdict finding Tom guilty means the loss of Jem's innocence.
