why does the author include calpurnia in the church scene

I think Lee wanted to show how proud Calpurnia was of Jem and Scout as well as the appreciation the congregation has for Atticus. Lula certainly brings up a point about segregation but respect for Atticus and his family outweighs anything Lula says.
