Francis is a nasty kid. In many ways he represents a much less refined version of Aunt Alexandra while Scout represents a less refined version of Atticus. Francis is rude and confrontational. Scout wants to stand up for what is right which, in this case, includes her father's stance on defending Tom Robinson.
