Why does Mr. Raymond tell Scout and Dill about his life?

Mr. Raymond tells the children that he doesn't drink, and that his bag merely contains a bottle of Coca-Cola. He tells them that his wife is black, they have children, and that the people of Maycomb can't accept it. If they think he's drunk, they simply believe his behavior can be blamed on his consumption of alcohol.
