Why does Mr Raymond make himself seem like an alcoholic?

Mr. Raymond feels that if people believe he is an alcoholic, they won't bother him about his "odd" behavior. Mr. Raymond is married to a black woman, loves the black community, and has children. Rather than have people talk about his family, he gives them a reason to talk about him.
