Why does Attitcus mention Tom's previous record of conviction?

As Jem tells us in the text, in talking about Tom's previous conviction, Atticus is showing that Tom has nothing to hide.

Dill leaned across me and asked Jem what Atticus was doing. Jem said Atticus was showing the jury that Tom had nothing to hide.
