Why does Atticus want Jem to meet Mrs. Dubose?

A. Atticus wanted Jem to realize the mean old lady yelling insults was not always like that.

B. Atticus wanted Jem to see what real courage is -- not a man with a gun in his hand but someone who faces extreme pain and suffering and wins, against the worst odds.

Okay I still like A but in the actual chapter I notice that Atticus uses the speech in B. So yes, for your answer I think B is your choice.

I think you should pick A! Atticus wanted to explain to Jem that Mrs. Dubose had a difficult life. The yelling and insults are a manifestation of the pain and suffering that she has been through. Atticus wanted to show Jem that Mrs. Dubose is a victim of her environment and needs to be shown understanding rather than scorn.
