Why do you think Mr. Dolpus Raymond is a strange character? Why does Lee use Mr. Raymond in the story?

Dolphus Raymond has opted out of white society. He has married a coloured woman and spends his time in the company of coloured people. He likes people to think that he is a drunk of sorts by drinking out of a paper bag. It is really only Coke though. Mr. Raymond represents a counterculture rebel who refuses to live by the rules of white society.

Why does he stagger around like he's a drunk man? He's a troubled sorta fella eh?

Sr. Raymond no se bebe . ¡Estas borracho! Yo no voy a responder a sus preguntas tontas porque son tan raro y nadie les gusta . Así que ... por favor perderse .
