Why do people mistreat others due to their religion, skin color and race?

In relation to Tom Robinson, we are really examining generations of racism especially from the days of slavery and bitterness from the South losing the Civil War. Most white people in the South still held blacks in low esteem which is why they would take Bob Ewell's word, a known drunk and louse, over Tom Robinson.
