Why do Aunt Alexandra and Scout pretend that nothing is wrong when they return to the ladies?

Aunt Alexandra and Scout pretend that nothing is amiss in order to preserve the civility of the situation and avoid discussion about the news that has upset them. This is the point at which Scout learns what being a lady is all about..... she is impressed by her aunt's example.
