Why do all the Negroes in the balcony stand when Atticus leaves the courtroom?

They stand out of respect for Atticus. They all knew he had proved Tom Robinson's innocence without a doubt. They know Atticus had touched the hearts of even the most bigoted whites on the jury. Unfortunately their harts were still too hard.
