Why did the community support Bob and Mayella Ewell

The community knew that both Bob and Mayella were probably lying. The white community shunned them until their word had to be taken over the word of a black man. The white community just could not fathom siding with a black man over the word of a white girl, even if she was Mayella Ewell: there was just too much ingrained bigotry in the town.
