Why did put Atticus put alot of effort into defendaing Tom Robinson

It was the right thing to do. Atticus told his kids that if he didn't defiant Tom, he could never tell them what to do again. Tom was an innocent Mockingbird, Atticus had to defend him the best he could in the name of humanity.
