why did mr cunningham get embarrassed to personally give the nuts to Atticus?

Mr. Cunningham was paying his legal bills with nuts. That is really all he had. Although poor, the Cunninghams were very proud. Mr. Cunningham knew Atticus deserved money but nuts were all he had. He didn't want the embarrassment of seeing Atticus when he gave him the nuts.
