Why did Cal take extra care going over the children's clothes before going to her church?How were Jem and Scout treated?

She wanted them to look perfect and make a good impression. She is the one in charge of their care, thus, their appearance would reflect upon her. Jem and Scout were warmly welcomed into church except by a brief disruption by one character.
